- Where Alan composes today
Forty years in music from the classroom to the Albert Hall.
Alan Simmons is a British-born composer who spent thirty years in music education before becoming a full-time composer and publisher in 1998. During that time he rose from classroom teacher to Director of Music for Schools in Yorkshire, and served as Vice President of the National Association of Choirs and Chair of Sing For Pleasure in the UK.
His professional experience extends well beyond the classroom. As a musical director he founded and led many choirs, including the renowned Mastersingers, and has served as chorus master for artists including Cleo Laine, Howard Keel and Roger Whittaker. In workshops he has worked alongside John Rutter CBE, Bob Chilcott and Alexander L’Estrange. His works have been performed at The Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, for Her Majesty The Queen in her Jubilee year at Symphony Hall Birmingham, and at Leeds Town Hall as part of the 2014 Grand Départ of the Tour de France.
Bringing children and adults together in music has been a constant thread in Alan’s work. His large-scale choral piece The Beauchamp Gloria places young singers on equal terms with adult performers. He has also worked extensively to encourage boys to sing — beginning with his 1983 football piece “Saturday Afternoon”, one of the earliest titles in the catalogue. Alan now lives and composes in the South of France.

What we publish
The Alan Simmons catalogue covers a wide range of choral voicings: SATB for full mixed choirs, SSA and SSAA for women’s and girls’ voices, TTBB for men’s ensembles, and SAB — a practical three-part voicing that suits developing mixed choirs and schools particularly well.
Genres include traditional hymns and carols, folk arrangements, pop and show standards, seasonal pieces, and original compositions. Many titles include a piano reduction and, where appropriate, audio previews so conductors can assess a piece before committing to an order.
How the catalogue is different
Sheet music is not in short supply. What is harder to find is music written by someone who has actually stood in front of the ensembles it is designed for. Alan Simmons’ arrangements reflect four decades of direct experience — with amateur choirs, professional singers, school groups and community ensembles at every level.
The result is a catalogue where the ranges are realistic, the harmonies are singable, and the difficulty ratings are honest. A Level 2 piece from this catalogue is a Level 2 piece in the rehearsal room — not on a best-case reading with a professional group.
Working with schools
A significant part of the catalogue is designed specifically for use in schools — primary assemblies, Key Stage 2 and 3 choirs, and secondary ensembles. See Music for schools for how we support teachers with difficulty guidance, song-library downloads and licensing information.
