Difficulty levels explained
Levels 1–5 at a glance
Our levels describe how much independence each vocal line needs in rehearsal — not an exam-board grade. Use them to programme progressively across a term or year.
Level 1
Unison or very accessible entry points; minimal harmonic independence; ideal for first rehearsals or younger groups.
Level 2
Simple harmony; short passages of independence; still quick to teach by ear or with light score reading.
Level 3
Moderate independence between parts; typical for confident junior or adult community choirs.
Level 4
More sustained part-writing; sections may need sectional rehearsal and clearer balance work.
Level 5
Advanced ensemble demands — suitable for experienced groups or showcase repertoire.
